colmenar

Colmenar

Colmenar is our local Pueblo Blanco (white village) and is only 6km from our villa. In the surrounding countryside there are numerous beehives from which the town name was derived ('colmena' is Spanish for beehive). Colmenar is a very friendly town with a good selection of bars, restaurants supermarkets, banks, medical centre and a bustling weekly market. It is also famous for its butchers where malagueños queue to buy their meat on Sunday evenings. The people of Colmenar enjoy a traditional Andalucian life and it is very different from places on the coast. In an evening you will often see locals with their mule or hear the tinkling of bells from the goat herds.

granada

Granada

Granada is a must see destination with its Moorish palace, the Alhambra, dominating the city and Albaicín the old Arabic quarter of alleyways and squares with cobbled stoned streets. Booking for the Alhambra is essential in high season for timed tickets.  These can be obtained from: http://www.alhambra-tickets.es/.   The Renaissance Cathedral is worth a visit and when you have had enough history there are fantastic shops, cafes and bars. Here is a fantastic youtube video of Granada.

malaga

Málaga

Málaga is the fifth largest city in Spain and remains largely untouched by tourism. The city boasts a magnificent cathedral, the Alcazaba (11th century Moorish castle) and numerous museums and galleries. The old quarter is shady and cool to wander around on hot afternoons and the streets are full of trendy bars, restaurants as well as traditional ‘bodegas’ and tapas bars.  A shopaholic will not be disappointed!

cordoba

Cordoba

Cordoba is a vibrant city and it's treasures include the Great Mosque, or "Mezquita" and the Alcazar, or Fortress, built by the Christians in 1328. Cordoba's medieval quarter, once the home of the Jewish community, is called "La Judería" (The Jewry), a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets, courtyards and picturesque squares such as La Plaza del Potro.

comares

The villages that you will see in our panoramic views are all worth a visit:

  • Comares a delightful village perched on top of a rocky outcrop.

  • Riogordo a traditional Andalucian village in the valley.

  • Periana a pretty village with steep and narrow streets and sulphurous Moorish baths at nearby Banos de Vilo.

  • Alcaucin situated on the western slope of La Maroma, (the highest mountain in Malaga province) with prehistoric sites including a cave near to El Boquete de Zafarraya where the remains of Neanderthal Man were found.

  • Canillas de Aceituno where locals believe the natural spring prevents ill health and nearby is the spectacular canyon of the River Almachares.
